Hill Stations in India

Kurinji flowers of Kodaikanal

Kurinji flowers, the special flowers which grow in & around Kodaikanal cannot be found any where else in the world.
Kurinji flowers are blooming on the declivity of the Kodaikanal hills, particularly near the Kurinji Andavar temple.

The Kurinji flower is native to South India, growing only in the Anamalai, Nilgiris and Palni hills in Tamil Nadu. It does not grow anywhere else in the world.
50 varieties

Though there are about 50 varieties of Kurinji, the blue coloured variety blooms only once in 12 years, environmentalists say.
Some plants started flowering in October 2005 itself. But 2006 is the peak season. Flowering of each plant commences after completing its cycle.

The peak flowering season will continue till 2006-end and may extend up to 2007, all plants do not flower at one time. With high germination rate, multiplication of this species in this region will also be high.
To protect and preserve the species, areas where the Kurinji grow should be protected and preserved, feel botanists.
A large valley with numerous Kurinji plants, between the Pambar river and Vattakanal below Coakers' walk, was identified for creating a sanctuary in April 2004.

A fresh spell of snowfall in Kufri-Shimla

Happy New Year
Draped in a pristine blanket of white, Himachal Pradesh's hill-town ufri is drawing hundreds of tourists every day from across the country to have a truly gala time with friends and family in its snow-covered slopes.
There has been a steady flow of tourists in Kufri, which is 15 kilometres from Shimla. The tourists and the newly wed couples, who were enjoying their visit to the hilly town during winters, are delighted to watch a fresh spell of snowfall in the region.

Situated at an altitude of 9,000 feet, Kufri town has received 10 centimetres of snow, as the region witnessed its second snowfall this season.
Enthusiastic tourists gleefully played in the snow, making snowmen and throwing snowballs at each other.

Santa Claus visited Gulmarg

Santa Claus visited Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir after a gap of 17 years as tourists and locals got together to celebrate a 'white' Christmas on Monday.
Locals gathered to pray for peace at a mass ceremony held in the town church. Muslims joined Christians to offer prayers, hoping for an end to violence and bloodshed that has claimed over 45,000 lives in state's 17-year rebellion.
There should be peace, prosperity and happiness in the valley, and I have come here to pray for that, said Sarfaraz Khan, a local dressed as Santa Claus.

Huge rush in Shimla

One of the country's most popular tourist attractions Shimla is bustling with visitors ahead of Christmas and the New Year.

Three extra-services of the toy train, which is a major attraction for tourists here, have been started to accommodate the large number of people pouring in from across the country and abroad.

The historic Mall Road and Ridge of the town is buzzing with life as tourists loiter around the square basking in the sun and enjoying the scenic beauty of the region.

"On this Christmas, I will be away from my wife and my family, and for this reason I know that Shimla is a place where I can feel the traditional feeling. It is the spirit of people being together and wanting to enjoy the season. It's about togetherness," said Daniel Charles, a French tourist.

Christmas portals, with figures of Mary, Joseph, Melchor, Gaspar and Baltazar (the three wise men), the ox and the mule and baby Jesus were seen in churches across the town.

No Yak rides in Shimla

The beast animal of higher altitudes is no longer visible in Shimla.
when i was doing a search on these animals i got2 know that they were sent back to higher altitudes whcih were brought to shimla for tourist attraction.
Thanks to objections by animal lovers and veterinarians, yaks will no longer huff and puff in the heat and on the asphalted roads of this Himalayan resort.

In October last year, three of these high altitude animals were introduced by civic officials in downtown Shimla for tourist rides. There were even plans to bring in more of the hairy and shaggy beasts to ferry more visitors.

But animal activists raised objections, saying the high mountain animals were not meant to be at such low altitudes.

'Yaks don't feel at home below 2,800 metres altitude, and Shimla is only at 2,150 metres which could be disastrous for them,' click here for more details.

Last day of Carnival 2006

Darjeeling: Carnival 2006 had good and bad experiences. Telegraph controversy, withdrawn of police forces from Chowrasta, cancellation of Dj police orchestra, cancellation of Marathon were the few unexpected incident for carnival 2006. The last day of Carnival 2006 ended with great show of “Mantra”. Chowrasta witnessed the highest packed of people ever during the show of Mantra. Even though, there was no any untoward incident despite the absent of police forces. Overall, it was grand success of Carnival 2006.

Fog disrupts life in Kashmir Valley

Srinagar, Dec .20: Kashmir is reeling under a Cold Wave as temperatures dipped several degrees below normal in the valley.

A thick mantle of fog covered the city on Wednesday morning, severely affecting movement of traffic, as visibility was reduced to barely a few meters.

Weather officials said the fog is a sequel to western disturbances.

"The fog phenomenon according to our climatology comes about whenever the western disturbance passes through the hills or plains, following which three four days later, the fog sets in. This is natural because as soon as western disturbance passes through an area, the temperature dips several degrees below normal and frost sets on the ground. So, when the next day sun rises and temperature rises, we get to see shallow fog," said L.C. Rao, Director of the Meteorological Department.

Kempty Falls, Mussoorie

Mussoorie (Uttaranchal) - It is a breathtaking waterfall amid picturesque hilly surroundings, a must see for visitors and in fact a great tourist draw, but scores of food stalls are eroding the beauty of Kempty Falls, making it a dumping ground for their waste.
Once an abode of tranquillity, the falls, located 15 km from Mussoorie, are polluted with plastic bags, bottles, paper scraps, food residues and litter from restaurants and shops around it. Tourists complain that government negligence and the greed of shopkeepers are degrading nature's wonder.

The spirit of Darjeeling

The `Queen of the Hills' showcases its rich and diverse cultural traditions in a 10-day carnival, hoping to make it a major tourist attraction in the years to come.

"This dream of today, this little hope
Let this flame turn into a blazing fire
Just a little sacrifice is all we need
Just a little thought, just a tiny seed
Of freedom written on the blue hill sky
Of peace and joy far and nigh."

THE hills came alive with the sound of music, as Darjeeling, the `Queen of the Hills', burst into a flourish of song and colour for 10 days, celebrating its first-ever carnival. What was unique about it was not its duration, but the fact that it was entirely the result of the initiative taken by the citizens of Darjeeling, in order to breathe fresh life into their hill station, which for long has been reeling under political turmoil, growing unemployment, and dwindling tea and tourism industries. Every community of Darjeeling participated in the extravaganza, showcasing the uniqueness of its culture - in terms of food, clothing, dance and music. In short, Darjeeling in its entire diversity came together to show that if people want, they can do well without strife based on religion, caste, creed and region.

Lord Shiva, the principle deity of Himachal Pradesh

Since time immemorial, the Himalayas has been recognized as the sanctuary for ascetics and sages. The Himalayas also occupy a central place in Hinduism. The whole region is considered the realm of Shiva- the supreme ascetic, and ‘Pashupati’ - the protecting deity of pastoral herds. Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of a lingam - a phallus symbolizing the male principle in the universe. In his manifestation as the cosmic darer, the Natraja, he rhythmically creates and destroys the cosmos. Famous shrines like the ice cave at Amarnath in Kashmir, the glacial formation at Kedarnath in Garhwal, and Jageshwar amidst a thick stand of deodar in Kumaon are dedicated to him. Kalidas, a resident of Ujjain, a city of Shiva, aptly described the Himalaya as the dazzling laughter of Shiva.

Do you know how many tourists visit Himachal Pradesh annually?

Four million tourists visit himachal pradesh annually from all over the world.
Definitely one of the best tourist destination in India.
The main source of income for the state is through tourism.
The state has many locations which attracts tourists all over the world.
Kullu, manali, shimla are few of them.
Tourists does not miss Rohtang pass which is 50 km from manali where temperature decreases below zero.
When i visited the place i was over excited to see the place & sorroundings completely covered with snow. Mostly the road to rohtang pass will be closed for 3-4 months due to heavy snow falls.
The rush to himachal has already started, people love to celebrate christmas & new year in the snow hills.
