My favorite places for summer gateway are Shimla, Manali, Darjeeling, Shillong. Presently my location is in Delhi and i will be going to Manali soon, Delhi heat is too much to bear, average 40 C. So, it is obvious for me to move to some hilly area. I have been to Manali before and again looking forward to it, if i can afford i will also go to Ladakh, never been there before, its only about budget.

Manali is really a cool place out there in the lap of north india. once i gone there in last summer , believe me if you opt for going to any hill area then manali is best choice you can go for
