Kullu Manali- An exciting trip

Hill Stations in India

The Previus post Are you planning for Kullu Manali tells you how to plan the trip to Manali & some tips to follow.
Now i want to continue to that post by writing my own experiences in the Manali trip.

Actually that was thursday night we started from here as friday was off work. Friday is diwali(Choti diwali i think), we thought of starting early at 8 pm, as usually it was so late because some of the trip members hasnt arrived from the office.
After having dinner here all of us ie 6 guys started from here & went to Alka theatre junction to pick up 2 more frends, from there we started to move, but as we reached the signal light at Gol chakkar, we came to know that we forgot one of my frends laptop, evry one suggted that we defnetly need to have a laptop as we are carrying some 3 digicams, if we do have a laptop we can transfer the fotos immediately & can start fresh again with the cam/memory card.
We returned back to room & picked up the laptop & again started towards golchakkar.
thats exactly at 11:45 pm. My god the traffic was so heavy in the night.

we are still in the outskirts of delhi at 12:30 also.
After 1 hr of journey we stopped some where near a dhaba, had some chai, photo session ha ha
Spent around 30 min & started again.
I was the one who said the Kullu manali trip details to freinds,
i doono how it will be, whether the guys coming with me will be satisfied or not as i am the one who will face them.
Kullu manali was the only place i was always thought of going since i came to delhi.
we went on listening the songs & watching out a movie in the laptop, after couple of hours we reached chandigarh, ha here i wanna tell u 1 thing.
police stopped our vehicle & asked to show the papers, we showed them but they asked 500 rs & we were surprised/shocked to hear like that."trip mein jaarahe hai &
aap tho software engineer hai, dekhiye sir" are the words used by a police man.
i jus gave 150 bucks & we left from there, paid taxes at toll bridges & we move on, after an hour i think the Ghat road started.
barely no one has slept that nyt, & no one wants to. enjoying the beautiful mountains on the way.
guys are clicking the cams continously.
It started raining when we passsed kullu, i expected some apple trees, but i donno which side i have to see so that i get a glimpse, un fortunately i missed,
another reason was i closed the windows of the scorpio as it was raining.
i really thought, if it rains in Manali also & if it doesnt stop, wat will we do sitting in hotel rooms,
luckily there wasnt anything like that in manali, offcourse its raining there 2, but it was a small drizzling kind.
we went to manali at 2:30 afternoon.
jus checked in the hotel rooms & went out to a good hotel which offers Andhra style food. thali cost us 70 rs per person, but it was good.
we planned nothing to do for that day as evry 1 wants to rest for the day as no 1 slept the entire nyt.
guys started boozing & had dinner & slept for the nyt.
the next day was the big day for us-going to "Rohtang Pass" i waked up at 5 am & started waking up all guys, we started from Manali at 8:30, the route From "Manali to Rohtang Pass" was simply superb
but at places the road was not good & that2 it was raining, theres a bit of fear also as the roads are very slippery at that time.

on the way we had so many photo sessions.we had taken 3 digital cams & a mini handy cam.
at 10:30 i think we were halted/stopped at a place & were not allowed further, the reason-roads are blocked.
i forgot 1 thing here to tell-when we actually started seeing the snow guys are screaming & after some distance we were completely surrounded by snow filed mountains
which was the best view i have ever seen.
it is definitely one of the best journeys i ever made & a nice memorable one.
we havent taken any woolen clothes as evry one decided not to wear any & goes unshirt & play with the snow
& we did that
every one was watching us with out shirts & every one was completely under heavy woolens.

To be contd

Snow fall in Himachal

The vehicular traffic (especially tourist vehicles) movement on the road came to a standstill & was not allowed to rohtang pass, tourist vehicles are halted 11 km to rohtang due to the fresh snow in rohtang pass & there sould be a possibility of snow slides.
Manali in himachal also recorded snow fall. The number two tourist spot-Rohtang pass is covered with a three-feet thick blanket of snow. With the snowfall, the winter games have started picking up there
Snowfall marked the beginning of 2006 winters in Manali. Fresh snowfall occurred in most parts of the Valley.
This is where vehicles will be halted if there is heavy snow fall, nearly 10 km to rohtang pass.

The Rohtang pass- Ladakh Highway was opened for traffic(not for tourists) despite snowfall at rohtang pass

My beautiful Nainital trip

Hill Stations in India
Want to Place your Travel related link in this blog? mail me your link detail at shri.ind@gmail.com for link exchange.

This was the trip which i went before Manali.
I went to Nainital 0n September 1st 2006.
I started my journey on a rainy day in delhi.

The below snap shows you my Resort where i stayed in Khurpatal, 10 km to Nainital.

Dangerous curves on the hill top enroute Nainital

Church on the road side

A beautiful lake in Nainital

I started in delhi xactly at 11:30 pm
i reached there-Khurpatal, 10 km from Nainital at 8.am
on the way we had only one stoppage at a gas station where we has some early morning breakfast at 4 am i think

Note:
If you are going to Nainital, try to get cushions seats other wise you feel pain in your ass
The roads from delhi to nainital are worst at some places-around 40-50 km i think.

If you are going in a group more than 20 members that 2 in a bus/mega van, you guys definitely cant sleep
as the same we did playing anthyakshari stuff & all.

my sincere suggestion to all of you is to have a good sleep in your journey so that you can utilize the next day by going to
trekking, seeing waterfalls & doing more stuff.
As many of my mates didnt have sleep, playing games all night, have a sound sleep the next day & didnt get a chance to visit the places.

so follow the above rule-not to wake up all the night journey that too if you have a limited time to see the places.

As i already told you, we reached Khurpatal at 8am. received warm welcome on a cool rainy day by the resort people.
Refreshment time for 30 min-every one got our room keys from the reception.
We had our tiffins & then moved out for trekking.

As you can see in the pictures, the resort where we stayed. the trekking place is also very nearby some km distance.
its a place with waterfalls around.

Punctures-Safety Instructions!

Hill Stations in India

I know one of the most serious issue in a journey on road is to face tyre puncture.
See what happened to my scorpio while travelling to Manali.

Tips:

1. The first & foremost advice is to have a Spare tyre/Stephny.
2. Dont overload the vehicle-which i did & was punished 4 that.

3.Dont over speed your vehicle.See driving instructions, if there's a sudden puncture, you & your vehicle will be thrown out.
4. If you are the one driving the vehicle, know how to pick up the jockeys/jawkey (Confused with the spell, ha ha) & changing the tyres. If you dont know how to change click here to

Shimla

General Information:
Shimla district lies between 30°45' and 31°44 North Latitude and between 77°0' and 78°19' East Longitude. It touches Mandi and Kullu in North, Kinnaur in the East, Uttar Pradesh in the South and Sirmaur district in the West.

The capital of the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. Well known as the queen of hills, an all time destination for tourists, for lovers of nature and solitude. The name Shimla is derived from Shyamala - the goddess - whose temple is situated in the thicky wooded hill region of Jakhoo. In the early 19th century passing through various phases of Gurkha wars the young Major Kennedy decided to build the first permanent residence in 1822 to get relief from the heat of the planes and settle in cool, healthy climate. Situated on the lower spurs on North-West Himalyas at a height of 2205 meters it has always enticed and cast a spell on anyone who set ones foot on these slopes once.

Climate
In winter, the temperature can drop below freezing point when heavy woolens are required. Summer temperature are mild and light woollens/cottons are recommended.
Climate Summer Max. 29*C. Min. 07* C.
Climate Winters Max. 18* C. Min. -03* C.

How to reach Shimla
Airways: Nearest airport is Jubbarhatti, 23 km from Shimla

Train: Connected by narrow gauge to Kalka 96 km from Shimla. Although Kalka is connected to other destinations like Delhi, Kolkata and Amritsar by broad gauge further, train takes about 6 hours from Kalka to Shimla.

Roadways: Accessible throughout the year from all major cities and town by road, all kinds of services available on the road. You can find more information on railway and travel reservation by clicking here

Major Spots in Shimla
THE RIDGE:
This large open space in the heart of town presents excellent views of the mountain ranges. Shimla's landmarks - the neo- gothic structure of Christ Church and the neo - Tudor library building - are worth seeing. Altitude is 2130 meters.

The Ridge is not only a portion of land in Shimla, it contains its life line. The water reservoir beneath it has a storage of ten lac gallons of water. The reservoir was constructed without using a ounce of cement in the eighteen eighties and only lime morter has been used. A major port on of the flat land consist of the debris and has resulted into so called sinking zone. The church on the ridge has a witness to numerous historical moments. The Ridge used to be a sacred place and may be the reason that the then Municipal Engineer Mr. Fletcher had the temerity to lay before the vehicle of the viceroy so as to stop him from crossing the Ridge.

Poor Engineer must having a night mare in his grave since even the air outlet of the Ridge reservoir stand removed! Mahatma Gandhi's statue on the Ridge must have been a logical fall out of the Indian Independence, but the Ridge is now adorned by more statues prompting old timers to term it as "Butt Kadan" i.e. "House of Statues". The rainfall on the Ridge results water taking two separate courses, one leads to the Bay of Bengal and the other to the Arabian Seas. Some rationalists point out that where even water get divided the opinion are seldom likely to be one, it is but natural that even before the Shimla summit concluded its obituary had been splashed by the media! The Ridge continue to evoke different opinion and definitely the same would be the fate of 24th March rally!

Mall Road
So called the heart of Shimla, The Mall is the most attractive place in the town. The Mall is the centre of Shimla's buzzing social life. It is a fairly level meandering esplanade that runs along the ridge. Tourists, both Indian and foreign, mingle with the locals and uniformed schoolchildren. An amazing multitude of honeymooners, bright and beautifully clad young couples, flock to this hill resort from all over India, and stand coyly to be photographed against the backdrop of Gaiety Theatre and Municipal Corporation, both declared Heritage properties now. Building which houses the Gaiety Theatre is under complete renovation and is getting its original height and shape. In the heyday of the British, the Mall often saw Officers resplendent in their uniforms, Memsahib in beautiful gowns and proud nannies behind baby prams taking their evening walk. The only conveyance of yesteryears used to be the ubiquitous gilded Rickshaws, a two- wheeled majestic cushioned - seat, pulled and pushed by four uniformed men. These Rickshaws were a part and parcel of the City and remained a common sight till late 1960's after which these beautiful Vehicles gradually diminished in number and now have become only a part of a byegone history.

It was just the place to see and be seen at. And as everyone wanted to be seen, it remained most crowded during the high season. The Mall stretches between Barnes Court in the east to the Viceregal Lodge in the west. There's a passenger lift connecting Cart Road to the (eastern) Mall. The main bazaar is concentrated along the middle and has many restaurants and most of the interesting buildings of Shimla.
The Mall - Walkers' Paradise
A fair walk through The Mall is required to appreciate the beauty of its shops, cafes, stores and restraunts. However, on feet is the only way to tread its neat&clean road as no vehicles other than the most emergent ones (i.e. fire brigade& Medicos and some top Administrative officials) are allowed.
LAKKAR BAZAR: Popular for its wood crafts and Souvenirs, this is just off the Ridge.
ST. MICHAEL'S CATHEDRAL: This dressed-stone church with fine stained glass has a cruciform design. It is located just off the Mall, below the District Courts.
STATE MUSEUM (3km): This houses a representative collection of Himachal Pradesh's rich heritage. Exhibits include archaeological artifacts, carvings, paintings and sculptures. Closed on Monday and holidays.
THE GLEN (4km): At 1830m, It is a thickly wooded ravine through which a stream flows. It is a popular picnic spot.
ANNANDALE (4.5km) : Surrounded by a thick deodar forest, this large glade has an ancient temple on an edge.
PROSPECT HILL AND KAMNA DEVI (6km) : At 2125m and crowned by a temple dedicated to Kamna Devi, the Hill offers spectacular wide views of the city and its environs.
SANKAT MOCHAN (7km): This is a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman.
TARA DEVI (11km): 2044m, A thickly wooded hill whose peak has a temple dedicated to Tara Devi.
MASHOBRA (12km): At 2149m, this beautiful suburb is surrounded by a thick forests. From here, a track leads down to Sipur which is an exquisite glade shaded by ancient deodar trees. There are old temples on a side and a fair is held every April.
KUFRI (16km): At 2501m, this is famous for its wide views and ski slopes. An enjoyable walk leads up to the Mahasu Peak. At Kufri, Himachal Tourism runs the Cafe Lalit.
FAGU (22km): At 2510m, Fagu has some enchanting views. Himachal Tourism runs the Hotel Peach Blossom (presently under renovation).
CHAIL (45km): This was the former 'summer capital' of the Patiala State
Worlds highest cricket ground is in Chail, click to see
TATTAPANI (51km) : At 656m, there are hot sulphur springs here. Himachal Tourism has a restaurant and Tourist Bungalow at Tattapani.

Lets know a bit about Ooty/Udhagamandalam

Ooty by Air:
The nearest airport is in Coimbatore, 100 km away. You can catch a direct flight to Coimbatore from Chennai, Kozhikode, Bangalore and Mumbai. Indian Airlines flies Delhi-Kochi via Mumbai and Coimbatore.
By Train:
Nearest broad gauge railway head is Mettupalayam (46 kms). Major broadgauge railway junction is Coimbatore. It is connected with all major cities. Mettupalayam to Ooty, is connected by a Mountain Railway which is 4 hours journey. At a height of 2,600m stands Udhagamandalam (Ooty) the Queen of Hill Stations. The 'Nilgiri toy train' connects Ooty to Mettupalayam, at the foot of the Nilgiris.
By Road:
Ooty is well connected by good roads. It is 535 km from Chennai (via Salem), 89 km from Coimbatore, 18 km from Coonoor (via Gudalur), 155 km from Mysore, 187 km from Calicut, 290 km from Bangalore, 281 km from Kochi (via Coimbatore and Palakkad), 236 km from Kodaikanal (via Coimbatore and Palani) There is a regular bus service from Bangalore, Mysore, Coimbatore, Calicut, Kanyakumari, Tanjavur, Tirupati and Cochin. Buses ply regularly to Mudhumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Kotagiri, Coonoor and Doddabeta.
Ooty also known as Udagamandalam is the "
Queen of hill stations" and the capital of Nilgiris district. It is one of the most popular tourist resorts in India. Nilgiris means "Blue Mountains". It is a land of picturesque picnic spots. Used to be popular summer and weekend getaway for the Britishers during the colonial days. It is situated at an altitude of 2,240 meters above sea level. An added attraction for the tourists to Udagamandalam is the mountain train journey on a ratchet and pinion track which commences from Kallar, near Mettupalayam and wends its way through many hair-raising curves and fearful tunnels and chugs along beside deep ravines full of verdant vegetation, gurgling streams and tea gardens.
One can notice a marvellous change in vegetation, as one goes from Kallar to Coonoor. The establishment of numerous tea estates made Ooty famous. Lofty mountains, dense forest, sprawling grasslands and miles and miles of tea gardens greet the passengers on most routes. The annual Tea and Tourism Festival attracts crowds in huge numbers.
History of Ooty
Ooty or Udagamandalam (the Tamil version of the original name) rightly described as "Queen of Hill Stations" by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, now sprawls over an area of 36 sq km with a number of tall buildings cluttering its hill slopes. It is situated at an altitude of 2,240 meters above sea level. Ooty still woos people from all over India as well as foreign countries right through summer, and sometimes in the winter months too.
The scenery, as it unfolds during the trip, is breathtaking, awe-inspiring and fantastic. One can notice a marvellous change in vegetation, as one goes from Kallar to Coonoor. At Kallar it is tropical and at Burliar-the next bus-stop as one proceeds from Mettupalayam-it is sub-tropical.
Near Coonoor, it is humid with pines, blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus) and cypress trees. As we go from Ooty to Gudalur, the change in vegetation is striking. What a splendid interaction between climate and vegetation ! It is therefore very appropriate that Mount Stuart called the whole road leading to
Ooty from Mettupalayam, "One long botanical debauch."
This beautiful botanical paradise was first brought to the public eye by John Sullivan, Collector of Coimbatore district in 1819. But prior to this in 1812, the first Englishmen who were sent up the Nilgris by the Collector of Coimbatore, were Mr. Keys, Assistant Revenue Surveyor, and his Assistant, McMahon. They made their way via Dananayakan Kottai to Aracad and the existing village of Denad, and penetrated as far as Kallatti, the lower level of North Ooty, but never set their eyes on the beautiful valley in which Ooty lay. After Keys' visit there was no further expedition until 1818 when J.C.Whish and N.W.Kindersly (Asst. and second Asst. to the Collector of Coimbatore respectively) went up by the Dananayakan Kottai-Denad route, crossed the plateau in a south-western direction and descended by the Sundapatti pass from Manjakombai to the Bhavani valley and then went back to Coimbatore. The purpose of their visit is not known.

In March 1819, John Sullivan obtained Rs 1,100 (Rupees of those days not to be compared with the present-day rupee) from the Board of Revenue for laying a bridle path up the hill from Sirumugai to Kotagiri and its neighboring village, Dhimatti. The work was executed by McPherson in a period of 2 years starting 1821. This was the only route to the Nilgris from Coimbatore until 1832, when the first Coonoor ghat road was laid, thanks to the then Governor, S.R. Lushington, who got the work executed by Lehardy and Capt. Murray. The present metalled ghat road from Kallar to Coonoor, a distance of 25 km which has 14 hair-pin bends and a gradient of one 18 ft, which facilitated carriage traffic from Madras to Ooty, was mainly constructed by Colonel G.V. Law in 1871. It is gratifying to note that the cascade of the Coonoor river near Wenlock bridge on the Coonoor-Mettupalayam road named after Law, continues to bear the same name.
The Coonoor-Mettupalayam road was extended to Udagamandalam, covering a distance of about 15 km. The Kotagiri-Mettupalayam road (about 34 km long) which was 8 ft wide to begin with, was widened to 17 ft in 1872-75 with a gradient of one in 17 by the Dist. Engineer, Major Morant R.E. and handed over to the District Board in 1881. During the period from 1819 to 1830, John Sullivan's contribution was, apart from laying the route to Ooty, that he built the first house called Stone House in this place. This formed the nucleus of Government offices. Further, at his own expense, he conducted experiments on agricultural and horticultural crops and in animal husbandry to find the most suitable crops and breeds of milch animals for future settlers.Next to the magnificent task of laying the road to Ooty, the British took up, around 1880, the stupendous task of connecting Mettupalayam to Ooty by rail. A Swiss engineer, M. Riggenback and Major Morant of Kotagiri road fame prepared an estimate of 1,32,000 pounds (currency) for laying the rack railway and floated a company called The Rigi Railway & Co Ltd. Since capital was not forthcoming, Mr. Richard Wolley of Coonoor came forward to advance money on the condition that the contract would be entrusted to Mr. Wolley by the Government of Chennai.
The agreement between the 2 was signed in 1886, and the company called The Nilgri Railway & Company came into being with a capital of Rs 25 lakh. The work on the line was started in August 1891 by Lord Wenlock, Governor or Madras, but the company was liquidated in 1894. Later, a new company was formed in 1894, and the work was completed in 1899. The line was worked by Madras Railway, to start with. Though the Nilgris formed part of Coimbatore district, it was separated into an independent district in 1868. For a period of 13 years from 1830, it remained part of Malabar district. This was to prevent tobacco smuggling from Coimbatore. From John Sullivan's days to this date, more than 170 years have rolled by. Udagamandalam considered a sanatorium and hill resort by the Europeans, has come to be like any other district. The devastation was so much that a ban on fresh construction was belatedly imposed by the Government.

Are you planning for Kullu-Manali??

Kullu-Manali-Rohtang Pass!

So how you are traveling?
How many days are you going to say?
What about accommodation?
Places to visit?
Best season to visit?
Wanna do shopping there?
What are the precautions to be taken?
I have answers for all. Let’s see from the first question-

So how you are traveling?
If you are starting from Delhi, I would suggest you to travel in a cab.
I will bet it will be an exciting journey for you.
If you are traveling as a group just book a MUV-a Scorpio, Innova etc which accommodates up to 8 persons (if you are 6, it will be comfortable to you).
From Delhi to Manali-602 km (what my Scorpio meter showed me) but worth traveling If you have already decided to go by road you will reach Manali after 12 hours-Including stoppages for food & other things.
If you know any travel agency then book your vehicle @ 6/- per km which I can say is the best deal. Start with loads of packaged food-chips, bhujia’s etc & off course music cd’s, woolens if traveling in September to Feb.
Note: Select a driver who has driving experience on Ghat roads because you will travel at least for 6 hours-nearly 200kms will be ghat road.
I will suggest you to start from Delhi in the evening i.e. at 11 pm so that you can have a glimpse of the hills & other beautiful picturesque in the morning.
You will reach manali at 11am or at least 12. Manali is 42 km from Kullu. You can visit some temples & do water rafting stuff in kullu.
Beas river shows you the way all over from kullu to manali.
Have a stoppage at Kullu & click your digi cams-suggested to capture the beautiful locations. If you have less time to spend then book your Air tickets, you will reach there with in an hour.

How many days are you going to stay?
Ah, already I have taken you to manali, so decide how many days you want to see.
Taking about my case, after reaching there, I decided to stay there at least for 5 days, previously I decided to stay for 2 nights.
I have never been to the place in the past, after seeing the snowy hills all around definitely I am not under control, It will be the same scene with you also, if you haven’t visited the place before. Take out some time & plan before starting itself to stay at least 5 days.

“Ok I think you have decided how many days you want to stay there’

What about Accommodation?
If you are a budget traveler, there are lots of budget hotels in manali.
So go & ask the receptionist in the hotel, if they say you 400 rupees per day, say them you can pay 200/- after couple of minute’s discussion you will get the room at your budget. There’s only one main road in manali, all the hotels are located near by that road itself.
Note: Normally the check out time in manali is 12 pm on any given day, so plan accordingly.
So I hope you are set with the accommodation now.
As you reached manali at 12-1 pm first have your lunch.
You will get some good hotels on the same road which I talked before.
Are you from south India don’t bother, there are good number of hotels which provides south Indian food, costs around 60-70/- per thali.
North Indians don’t bother as they get their rotis.
If you want to taste some good Chinese cuisines, you will get that too.

Have your lunch & take rest for at least couple of hours so that you can cover some places in the evening.
Ever thing is set &

What are the places to visit?
Hadimba temple
Manu temple
Famou gurudwara
Buddhist monasteries
Vashist temple etc..
Visit some of the places & start your next day journey to Rohtang pass

Best season to visit
Want to see snow hills then the best season to visit Manali, Rohtang pass (roads will be blocked if heavy snow falls) is September to January.
I visited in October, I celebrated diwali in rohtang pass.
Rohtang pass is 61 km from Manali. It will take 1 ½ hr to reach there.
On the way to rohtang there are lots of shops which gives long woolen coats & rubber shoes on rent, you can try those stuff.
After ½ hr the live moments of the journey comes, as your vehicles passes through the mountains completely covered with snow. Have some snaps on the way for you memories. At last you will reach Rohtang pass where you will find a thick layer of at least 3 foot.
My vehicle was stopped 11 km before rohtang pass because of heavy snow fall, roads are blocked & tourist vehicles are never allowed under that circumstances.
A local jeep river offered me a ride to rohtang pass for 1500/- to & fro-22 kms.
I don’t suggest you to put that much amount for that as mostly it will be the stuff you will find there.
If you are traveling in any other season you can have a look of Rohtang pass.
Forgot to tell you if can arrange a camcorder for you self, it will be a good idea. So that you can record your finest moment of your life.

Have a look at some of the snaps I have taken in that trip.
Really, I cannot forget the trip. I have seen so many places but this one is for a life time remembrance. I was mesmerized as I haven’t seen snow mountains-(have seen in movies).
Spend time till 4 pm & start there for safer return.

Wanna do shopping there?
I haven’t found any special things to buy there- you have a try.
Mostly the things available there are woolens, belts etc.
You can get the best deal in sorojininagar, palika bazaar than in Manali.

Visit the uncovered places-with the help of local tourist guide.
Don’t hesitate to visit temples.
You will see/get some interesting stuff there.

What are the precautions (for your safety) to be taken?
As discussed some of the points above,
Experienced driver-Must
Woolen clothes- depends on your visiting time.
Try to have your vehicle’s back seat in straight-not understood, leave it.
Do not travel when it was raining, land slides, heavy snow fall etc.

Finally, I hope the above things will help you some thing to know about the place.

Note: Do not close the browser with out giving Feed back- Mandatory
